History and romance, the warmth of family and 19th century architecture all combine to bring to us today the glory that is 6100-6102 Ardleigh Street in the unique Quaker community of “Awbury.” Built in 1854, this property was intended to be the summer home of Quaker and shipping merchant Henry Cope and his family close by the home of his daughter Mary who shortly before had married John Haines and in 1851 moved into their new house on Haines Street. The Cope family, close-knit and numerous, soon considered Awbury and the many acres around it their year-round home. Henry’s son Thomas resided at Awbury with his family. His son Francis’ family resided in a magnificent Victorian nearby. The three homes created the nucleus of a family compound that existed long into the 20th century. Cope relations and descendants added several more beautiful homes over the years. Today, these homes are privately owned and surrounded by acres and acres of the beautiful landscape of Awbury Arboretum, run by the Awbury Arboretum Association. The Francis Cope home is currently used as the Arboretum headquarters. Henry Cope’s residence, “Awbury,” was empty for several years during the 1940’s. It was divided into two separate living units after 1948 and over ensuing years suffered some deterioration from deferred maintenance. In 1987, it was purchased by the current owners who have sensitively and carefully removed intrusive partitions and have worked diligently to restore its original architectural integrity to the house. At this time, “Awbury” consists of the original 1854 house minus its front porch, an apartment on the 3rd floor, an 1875 addition in the rear that is a legal rental unit, and the remains of the original ice house. The Awbury Arboretum community is unique in the Philadelphia area. It is a bit of country in the midst of the city. Germantown historian Edwin Jellett articulated the Awbury whole in the early twentieth century: “. . . one of the largest, one of the finest and on account of its family life, the most interesting of many home estates. It is like a great park, abounding with walks, drives, rare shrubs, trees, and richly stored gardens.” Surrounded by natural beauty and architectural splendor, an occupant of “Awbury” enjoys the vitality of the arboretum, the convenience of the commuter train station and the congeniality of neighbors. The Awbury Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its homes are have been certified as historic by the Philadelphia Historic Commission.
